Australia. Immigration. Thought

  • by

Food for thought.

Stripping subjectivity and emotive language from the topic of immigration in Australia, statistics of past years points to a logical correlation between the yearly ratio of immigration to emigration, and changes in the number of people seeking homes compared to the number of homes available.

Rather than rhetoric about anyone’s perceived reasons behind changes to immigration or house build rates, why not intrinsically link one to the other. Say regulate immigration to 95% of the total houses built in a year?

Other thoughts:

  • Exclude returning Australian citizens from the count
  • The reduction would need to include tourist visas, as otherwise that would become the popular loophole to get in and hide/stay
  • As a reduction in immigration hurts the tourism industry, maybe they begin to undercut the rental crisis by long term rentals to those struggling to find rentals
